Topic: The Estate Freeze and What Comes After It

An estate freeze appears in most owner-manager files. The mechanics are well understood. What the structure commits a family to over the following years is examined far less often, and usually only when something forces the question.

This session opens with the estate freeze as a set of decisions rather than a set of steps, then follows what those decisions set in motion. Some of what surfaces later are conditions that had to hold from the beginning. Some are constraints sitting in other documents, including the shareholders agreement and the will. Some are events on a clock, among them the trust's twenty-first anniversary and the freezor's own income needs as the preferred shares are redeemed down.
